( WHEN I SEE YOUR SMILE )

NOW THAT I AM STRONG , I'VE FIGURED OUT

Boring, boring, boring ... She checked boxes on her little checklist as she worked her way through the pages. The examinations never seemed to end. This, of course, was just a routine check up. She had to do this every month. Make sure the breeders were where they were supposed to be, doing what they were supposed to be. She had to keep the dorm mothers and fathers in line. They didn't usually give her any trouble, but the occasional one got cranky and didn't cooperate. It was fine, a flash of her fangs and they gulped. She thought it was funny that one of her "smiles" elicited such a response. Technically, if the humans just refused to breed, the vampires and the shifters would have no food, so they couldn't survive either. So really, the humans were in control, or could be if they wanted to. Yet, either they weren't smart enough, or they weren't gutsy enough to stand up to the monsters. Maybe they valued life more than freedom. Silly creatures, death was coming for them regardless. Unless, of course, they were special in some way and "worthy of joining our race," as Annabeth's sister so eloquently put it. She was just so goddamn proud of being a vampire, it made Anna want to puh-yuke. There was nothing lovely about being dead and alive at the same time and smelling like decaying carcasses. (Well, apparently humans thought this smelled bad. To her, it smelled normal and humans smelled somewhat unappetizing, but still. Smelling bad is not a good thing.)
But whatever, she just needed to finish this. Irritation eating away at her would not help her finish it any faster. She looked at her watch, three thirty-two. Sighing, she slid on her sunglasses and marched through the narrow alley between the two building she was checking on. Even though, for her, it was a journey of less than three seconds, the huge difference between light and dark would have blinded her for at least a minute. The next building? The Broadway theater.
This was the infamous theater from human civilization pre-vampire domination. It was absolutely lovely, really. She loved the old-fashioned music hall, especially the seats. Annabeth made her way up the stairs on the side of the stage and perched there at the front of the stage, staring at the rows and rows of antiquated scarlett seats. There was supposed to be another play two weeks from tomorrow. She made a mental note not to miss it. The relief from the serious day to day routines she faced was indescribably welcome. She set her clipboard down and gazed absentmindedly out at the empty hall. She moved to the edge of the stage and sat down, dangling her slender legs over the edge, swinging them back and forth.
Suddenly she heard a noise to her left. Instantly on her guard, she stiffened, her whole body ready to act. She may be shy and quiet, but in no way was she inadequate. Well, if it was another vampire, she may be in trouble, but if it was a breeder, she had the advantage. Hello? she asked, giving them a chance to reply. She wasn't about to attack without a reason. If she was in a no danger, there wouldn't be any brawl here.
